Most organisations promote strong performers and leave them to figure out leadership on their own. The LTF gives new leaders what their organisation didn't: a practical, comprehensive framework for the most important professional shift they will make.
The Challenge
The skills that made someone an exceptional individual contributor are not the skills that make them an effective leader. The transition is a genuine professional reinvention, and most organisations provide almost no practical support for it.
The best sales person, engineer, or analyst is promoted because of what they can do themselves. But leadership is about what you can enable in others. The mindset, the skills, and the measures of success are fundamentally different, and that shift takes deliberate work.
Most new leaders receive a title change, maybe a one-day program, and then get left to work it out. The expectation is that leadership capability will emerge naturally. It often doesn't, and the costs of that gap are borne by the leader, the team, and the organisation.
Patterns set in the first year of leadership tend to stick. Leaders who develop unhelpful habits early, micromanaging, avoiding difficult conversations, protecting technical work instead of delegating, often carry those patterns for years. Early investment in the right foundations matters enormously.
There is no shortage of leadership books or courses. What is scarce is practical, specific guidance for the moments that new leaders actually face: the first underperformance conversation, the team member who is struggling, the inherited team dynamic that isn't working. That is what the LTF is built for.
"Operational success is largely about personal capability. Leadership success is largely about creating capability in others."The central thesis of the Leadership Transition Framework: Michael Linke, Linke Leadership
What's Inside
The LTF is a comprehensive, structured resource built around the real challenges new leaders face. It is practical, evidence-based, and designed to be used in the moments that matter, not just read once and filed away.
Type a genuine leadership question in plain English and get a direct, practical answer drawn from across the full framework, with references to every relevant section. No searching through documents, just ask what you need to know, right when you need it.
Real situations with real guidance: the first underperformance conversation, the team member who pushes back on your authority, the inherited conflict you didn't create, the stakeholder you can't direct. Each moment shows the old response and the leadership response, with the reasoning behind the difference.
From the mindset shift and emotional intelligence through to strategic thinking, change leadership, and creating the environment for your team's success. Each pillar is grounded in the best available research and translated into practical application.
Coaching question banks, delegation matrices, conversation planning templates, team health checks, and a 90-day leadership transition plan. Built to be used in real work, not read in a training room and then forgotten.
The leadership transition is not a simple topic. The LTF gives it the depth it deserves: 57 chapters and sections covering the full range of what new leaders need to understand and be able to do. Searchable, structured, and designed for the way leaders actually work.
The LTF is a living resource, updated as the framework develops and new content is added. Your subscription gives you access to the full current framework and all future updates throughout your subscription period.
The Framework
The LTF is structured around ten evidence-based pillars that cover the full scope of what the leadership transition requires. Each pillar builds on the previous, creating a coherent model rather than a list of disconnected topics.
Moving from personal achievement to enabling others. The foundational transition that everything else depends on.
Understanding how your style, triggers, and blind spots affect the people around you, and learning to manage them.
Leading without positional authority. The shift from directing to influencing, from telling to asking.
Understanding what makes teams work, how to set them up for success, and what to do when they are not performing.
Moving technical work to others. Creating accountability without creating fear. Getting results through people rather than doing it yourself.
The conversations most new leaders avoid. The skills and frameworks that make them manageable, and productive.
How leadership decisions differ from operational decisions. Navigating uncertainty, risk, and competing priorities.
Lifting from the operational to the strategic. Understanding your team's work in the context of the organisation's goals and direction.
How to bring a team through change without losing trust or performance. The leader's role in change that others design, and change that you do.
The culture, the conditions, and the leadership presence that allow your people to do their best work consistently.
Who This Is For
You have just made the move from individual contributor to people leader. You are good at the technical work. Now you need to build the leadership skills that the role actually requires, and that no one fully prepared you for.
You are through the initial transition but still working out the harder parts: difficult conversations, delegation, building a high-performing team, navigating organisational politics. The LTF gives you a framework to work through those challenges deliberately.
You are supporting leaders through the transition and need a resource with enough depth and practicality to make a real difference. The LTF can be used as a standalone resource or integrated into your broader development programs.
About Michael
Michael Linke developed the Leadership Transition Framework from three decades of working with emerging and senior leaders across some of Australia's most complex organisations. He has seen the transition done well and done badly, and he has led organisations through it himself.
The LTF is not an academic exercise. It is a practical resource built on what Michael has seen work: the conversations that had to be had, the decisions that had to be made, and the mindset shifts that separated the leaders who thrived from those who struggled. It is the resource he wished existed when he was making the transition himself.
Michael is a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program (AMP 210) and works with individuals and organisations across Australia and internationally.
